CT Department of Public Health moving its PPE stockpile to East Hartford facility

Journal Inquirer - 5/8/2024

May 8—EAST HARTFORD — The state is moving its stockpile of personal protective equipment and other emergency supplies to a storage facility in town.

Earlier this year, the state Department of Public Health signed a lease to store PPE supplies in 127,529 square feet of a 515,000-square-foot property at 88 Long Hill St., which is owned by East Hartford Business Park LLC.

"The state-managed stockpile is limited to PPE and other emergency supplies, and is intended for emergency use only, and not intended to be the initial primary source of PPE for identified recipients," said Chris Boyle, DPH's director of communications.

The PPE was previously stored at a facility in New Britain. DPH was interested in purchasing the former Sam's Club in the Buckland Hills area of Manchester to store its COVID-related supplies in September 2022 for no more than $6.8 million, but negotiations fell through on the property.

Because there is no management company involved with the East Hartford facility, Boyle said there was a reduced cost to lease it. The lease is a fixed-monthly rent of $66,421, he said.

Ameriport Logistics Inc. — a freight carrier from Massachusetts, occupies 167,518 square feet of the building.

Nicholas Morizion of the real estate firm Colliers said the state's lease will end on Dec. 31, 2026.
